In Training for Winter

PresqueIsle_training2-1956

Marquette offers ample locations for training. Winter will not catch these skiers unprepared. I want to get into Cross Country Skiing but this has been a difficult year for me economically. I was on Presque Isle today to run. I am up to 10K runs and would love to do the 12K Noque this year. But I need to win the lottery, first.

November 2, Snow Clouds?

TealLakerough_sunset-1781

Off work at 5pm and sun setting, already. The wind turned cold and Teal Lake rough. My hands beet red and chapped in minutes. Snow is predicted, perhaps it will blow right on by! The leaves are all off the trees at Al Quaal accept some tough Oak leaves that will try their best to ride out winter. There was open seating for tonight’s sunset.

September Storm

Some said that last night there was snow in the air. I did not witness, snow. My car hit a downed tree on the way home from work during a high wind storm. Rain was coming down in sheets. Today, between working a split-shift I went out to Presque Isle to take photos. The scene is winter-ish, so here we go! The first winter photo of the 2009-10 winter season.

Winter’s End?

I am hoping that Buddha is smiling in my garden ‘casue winter is finally over. Remember to visit kimnixon.com during the warm months of the Upper Peninsula to keep up with my non-winter activities.

A two-day storm in April hits the Upper Peninsula on April 20 and 21st, 2009. I’ve had to work the day-job so shots have been taking while travelling, and honest, I was as safe as I could be. I pulled over for this shot.

Can you believe that tomorrow is Earth Day? I can’t believe I am competing in a 5k on Saturday. I tell you it all better melt. I think the trees in this photo are saying, “Heikki Lunta Went That Way!”

I have a series of photos called, In My Own Backyard. This shot is so priceless to me. The Mourning Doves have graced our apple tree, pond and waterfall but now they have brought another couple with them. Their peaceful coo coo is calming. This means the ice on the pond has melted. Spring may be here.

The USCG Mobile Bay broke the ice into Marquette’s Lower Harbor this weekend. The sun glittered on the fresh cut ice. I was surprised to see how thick the ice was 4-8 inches. I guess last weekend’s Ice fisherman were safe afterall. Whew!

This is a sure sign of spring’s coming! The Great Lakes shipping season will soon be underway.

These photos were taken on the evening of March 14, 2009. The ice so thin it took less than a minute for an auger to rush through. Water was atop the ice, but so were many fishermen and women.

Winter is fading in the Upper Peninsula. We may have another storm or two. The thaw has certainly arrived, though. Warm enough to wear a light coat some days.

I have never understood the attraction to thin ice, or ice-fishing for that matter. I will wait for warmer temps and head out in a boat.
